 Patient Participation Group.

The Hawthorn Medical Centre has a very active Patient Participation Group which have just hosted a Diabetic evening for patients and their friends. More than 100 people attended and enjoyed advice given by guest speakers, Matthew Spencer from the Swindon Diabetic Society and Gail Richards a Diabetic Nurse from the Great Western Hospital. Our own Diabetic Nurses were also on hand for advice. Five Doctors from the practice were available for a question and answer session before light refreshments were served. Following the success of this event we are now looking for new venues to hold further informative meetings that will comfortably accommodate more than 100 people.

With the money raised at various functions by the PPG we are hoping to provide new chairs for the waiting room.

Training Practice

The Hawthorn Medical Centre trains medical and health staff.

 GP registrar

Hawthorn Medical Centre has become a recognised training practice. The practice has two qualified trainers, Dr Janson and Dr Mearns who have been supervising GP registrars from August 2005.

GP registrars are doctors who are training to specialise in General Practice and each will spend a year with the practice.

Our first registrar is Dr Katherine Applegate

We also take overseas doctors for short placements (three months) and currently have Dr Tobias from Germany gaining experience in a UK practice.

Paramedic

We are pleased to be offering support to Ambulance staff undertaking the Emergency Care Practitioner training, and we have been taking students for a two week period.
