No of Partners: 6 (4 full time, 2 half time) Northlands as a Training PracticeWe have been a training practice for many years. Past "graduates" include media-doc Dr Phil Hammond and two of the current partners. Dr Martin Searle (b1958) is the current trainer, but all partners, nurses and attached staff regard themselves as part of the training team. Past GPRs have said that they are happy to be contacted for enquiries about life at Northlands and what Martin is like as a trainer!
Please note that as at 2/03 we are "full" until 8/05. Practice GeographySemi-rural. Practice is based in small market town which is in the centre of a practice area of ~8 miles diameter, including about a dozen villages (~18% of practice population live more than 3 miles from surgery). Practice demographyFairly average age distribution (8% over 75 years old). Probably some weighting towards social classes IV, V in Calne itself. There is an increasing population in town due to new housing. PremisesPractice-owned purpose-built (opened January 1995) with separate room for each partner and GP registrar, 4 separate examination rooms, 3 treatment rooms, practice library/conference room, plus rooms for physiotherapy, counsellor, and social services link-worker. There are no branch surgeries. ComputerisationPractice uses EMIS GVI software - the whole system was installed in 2002. There is a terminal with Internet access on each desk and all prescribing is computerized, but the practice is not yet paper-less. ClinicsAntenatal/postnatal, child development surveillance, asthma, diabetes, immunization, well woman, hypertension, heart failure, smoke stop. Minor surgery is performed. Primary Care TrustKennet and North Wiltshire. Outside CommitmentsAll partners are very committed to general practice at Northlands Surgery, but some committee appointments are held. Out-of-hours CoverThe partners use (and work for) The North West Wiltshire Out-of-Hours Co-op based at Chippenham Hospital. This results in working ~1 in 34 nights (covering 95,000 patients) and ~2 evenings/weekday sessions per month (covering 35,000 patients). Saturday mornings are covered within the practice on a 1 in 6 rota. Special FeaturesThe practice is a 'Research and Development' practice - Dr Beale is funded by the NHS Executive to work on research 1 day a week. A medical student from Kings College Hospital Medical School is attached for 2 weeks most years (in July). Local HospitalsRoyal United Hospital, Bath and Great Western Hospital, Swindon are ~20 miles away. Chippenham Hospital (~5 miles away) has limited casualty and outpatient clinics.
